What the MD Anderson Energy Healing Study Means for Reiki

A landmark 4-year study from one of the world's top cancer centers just changed what we know about healing — and it's time to talk about it.
I'm going to be honest with you: I've been doing this work for years, and I've seen things shift in bodies that no pill prescribed. I've watched people come in anxious, in pain, or exhausted — and leave lighter. I've held space for clients navigating cancer, grief, burnout — and felt something move through a session that science struggled to name.
Until now.
What the Study Found
In April 2026, a four-year preclinical study out of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center — one of the most respected cancer research institutions in the world — published findings that stopped the wellness and medical communities in their tracks.
The research focused on biofield therapy (BT), the umbrella term for energy-based healing modalities like Reiki. In repeated experiments on cancer cells and animal models, biofield therapy produced something remarkable:

The study found that BT appeared to influence cancer at a fundamental level — affecting cellular energy systems, electrical signaling, and gene regulation pathways. In other words: something is happening at the level of biology, not just belief.
The Placebo Question — Answered
This is the question I get most. "Isn't Reiki just placebo?" And fair enough — it's a reasonable skeptic's question. But the researchers were ahead of you.

Cells don't have beliefs. Mice don't know they're in a study. When something shifts in a petri dish, it's not wishful thinking — it's physics, biology, something real. This study was designed specifically to rule out placebo, and it still found the effect.
What This Means for You
This isn't a validation I needed to keep showing up for my clients. But it IS a moment that deserves your attention — especially if you've been sitting on the fence about energy work, or if someone in your life has dismissed it as "woo."
Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive and treatment-resistant cancers we know. The fact that biofield therapy produced effects comparable to chemotherapy — on the most difficult terrain imaginable — tells us something profound about what the body is capable of receiving.
The researchers are now calling for human clinical trials and deeper mechanistic study. This is how science moves forward: from preclinical data to human application. We're at the beginning of something.
A Note of Honesty
I want to be clear: this study does not mean Reiki cures cancer. The researchers themselves said further research is needed, and human trials haven't begun. What it means is that the energetic field around and within us is real, measurable, and biologically responsive. And that is worth sitting with.
Reiki has always been a complement to — not a replacement for — conventional care. What this research opens up is the possibility of a more integrated future: one where oncologists and energy practitioners work side by side, where the body is understood as both biochemical and bioelectric.
That future is already here. We just needed the data to back it.
